Give your car a summer health check

Just as we can start to struggle as the hotter weather kicks in, so too can our cars. But with a thorough Summer health check you can help prevent the onset of heat exhaustion and breeze through the summer cool, calm and collected!

The following 5 point checklist gives you a good idea what to look out for - and the action you can take...

Problem: Headaches, flu-like symptoms and a warm, smelly car can all be symptoms of a poorly maintained air-con unit.

Solution: Most drivers don't realise that it's worth running your air-con for at least an hour a week to allow the coolant in the system to do its job and prevent corrosion. In most cases a re-gas will easily put this right but it's always best to have a professional look at your unit to ensure there isn't a bigger problem affecting performance.

Problem: Hot road surfaces and summer showers can have a nasty impact on road-holding if your tyres aren't in top condition. Whilst the legal tyre tread depth is 1.6mm, braking and cornering in particular deteriorate at 3mm.

Solution: It pays to check your tyres thoroughly - look for nicks, bulges and cracks in particular, and always make sure the pressure is correct. If you find any damage, or a tyre is on the threshold of the legal limit, you should get it sorted straight away - it's better to be safe than sorry. Don't forget to make sure the spare is up to scratch too.

Problem: Lighter days and evenings can mean that broken lights aren't spotted as soon as they occur.

Solution: Make sure that you check all your lights are in working order. It's not only a hazard, but driving with a faulty light could land you with a Fixed Penalty notice if the police spot it before you do ...

Problem: Hot summer weather means your engine may require extra lubrication. If your oil level is low, you may see your car getting thirsty for fuel and if runs out completely it can overheat, or even seize up completely.

Solution: Oil levels should be checked regularly especially before a long trip. You should aim to check your oil every week to ensure your can runs as smoothly and efficiently as possible.

Problem: Wiper blades which are split and worn can leave streaks and smears behind, obscuring the driver's vision, especially if you're caught in a sudden summer storm.

Solution: To provide a clean wiper sweep, renew wiper blades and add screen wash detergent to the washer reservoir.
